Ground Transportation Options in Thailand | Taxi, SkyTrain, Subway and More

There are many ways to get around Thailand, including the following list of the most popular means of transportation.  Most taxis and buses run on Natural Gas to help with pollution control and economic mileage.  

Foreign visitors usually travel by Taxi or SkyTrain upon airport arrival in Bangkok. Note our highlighted recommendations below for traveling in Thailand:

Bangkok Getting Around the Country

TaxisTaxi cabs are the chosen method of transportation with immediate pickup and dropoff.  Fares start around 35 baht for the first 3 kilometers and 5 baht for each after.  Passengers pay tolls on the expressway.


SkyTrain : The BTS SkyTransit system is noted to be one of the finest in the world.  Trains are fast, convenient and clean with two lines (Sukhumvit and Silom)operating from 6am – midnight.  Fares range from 15-40 baht per trip and the SkyTrain connects directly to the airport.


MRT Subway : a good choice to get around Bangkok. The service open 6am – midnight, with fares between 16-41 Baht per trip. There are 3 interchanges with the BTS lines.


Airport Rail Link : provides train service at the maximum speed of 160 kilometer per hour on an elevated track parallel to the eastern railway, which covers the distance of approximately 28 kilometers, passing through 8 stations.


Buses : Easily accessible buses are an inexpensive and plentiful option to travel in and around Bangkok.  Bus fares start around 10 baht but are used more by local residents.


Air : Traveling by air from Bangkok to the regional airports is recommended.  Once visitors arrive, they usually travel by taxi in Chiangmai, Phuket or more.


Coach BusesThailand features a wide variety of bus options, including comfortable air conditioned coaches, linking all major and minor cities and towns throughout the country.


Custom Transfers : Custom limousine services are available and reasonably priced, providing professional drivers and a selection of vehicles for your convenience, comfort and safety.


Car & Vehicle HireWhen traveling in Thailand, hiring a Thai car can be an enjoyable and relatively inexpensive way of getting about.(right hand driving).
